About Sarah
Sarah Fitzgerald, Lic.Ac., MBAcC, is a fully qualified and licensed practitioner and a member of The British Acupuncture Council. She studied acupuncture at the City College of Acupuncture, London, graduating with a First degree level Licentiate.
Sarah is also a member of the Acupuncture Fertility Network, having completed integrated Post Graduate level training and is committed to ongoing Postgraduate study in the areas of Gynaecology and Fertility, with a particular emphasis on Assisted Conception. Additionally, she is an AXA Healthcare Registered Provider for Medical Acupuncture.
Transitioning to acupuncture as her second career, Sarah came from a background in Banking, having worked in both the City of London and Auckland, New Zealand. Her introduction to acupuncture as a patient, for sports injuries and stress-related symptoms during her time in Finance, sparked her interest in the field. Since then, acupuncture has played a significant role in maintaining her physical and mental wellbeing.
Following a period of professional and personal reflection, Sarah embarked on three years of intensive study under some of the UK’s leading Acupuncturists, culminating in the founding of Koru Acupuncture.
WHAT DOES ACUPUNCTURE INVOLVE?
Acupuncture is a holistic medicine system that originated in China over 2000 years ago. It involves the insertion of fine needles at specific points on the body to restore the free flow of energy, known as Qi, along the body’s meridians. This process aims to stimulate the body’s natural healing response and promote physical, mental, and emotional balance.
In Western medicine, acupuncture is understood to stimulate nerves in the skin and muscles, triggering the release of neurochemical messenger molecules. These biochemical changes influence the body’s homeostatic mechanisms, promoting overall physical and emotional wellbeing.
For a more in-depth exploration of the modern scientific understanding of acupuncture, detailed information can be found in the “Miscellaneous” section here
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture can complement Western medicine and other therapies in most cases.
While some individuals seek acupuncture to address specific health issues, others use it to enhance feelings of balance and overall wellbeing. It can also serve as a preventive measure as part of a comprehensive healthcare routine.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY TREATMENT?
Your individual treatment plan will be based on your state of health and lifestyle.
The combination of points used will be right for your whole body, as well as your symptoms.
It may not just be needles that are used! Depending on your needs, massage, cupping, Gua Sha and Earseeds may also be incorporated. This does not change the cost of the treatment.
Acupuncture needles are so fine that most people don’t feel them being inserted. You may feel a mild tingle as they are adjusted. Many people feel deeply relaxed during the treatment. In fact, it is the ultimate compliment if you fall asleep! You can typically expect to rest with the needles in for around 20 minutes.
CAN ACUPUNCTURE BE COVERED BY PRIVATE HEALTHCARE POLICIES?
Sarah is a registered AXA Health Medical Acupuncture Provider. Many other private healthcare providers offer coverage for acupuncture services provided by British Acupuncture Council members. However, coverage terms and conditions may vary, so it is advisable to consult your provider regarding your specific policy details.
HOW CAN SCAR THERAPY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Scar therapy aims to enhance both functional and cosmetic outcomes following surgery, procedures, or injuries that result in scar tissue formation. It serves to alleviate common symptoms like pain and sensitivity while promoting changes in scar tissue on the skin surface and addressing adhesions or fibrosis in the underlying tissues.
WHERE CAN SCAR THERAPY BE APPLIED?
RESTORE Scar Therapy is suitable for use on both the body and face.
WHAT DOES SCAR THERAPY TREATMENT INCLUDE?
Your scar therapy session will feature a specialised scar massage tailored to your comfort level in terms of pace and pressure. Additionally, you will receive guidance on scar care practices for home maintenance. The treatment also encompasses the integration of my existing physical therapy expertise to support your overall well-being. You have the option to combine your scar therapy with an acupuncture session or choose it as a standalone treatment.
WHAT IF I FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE DISCUSSING OR TOUCHING MY SCAR AND HOW IT HAPPENED?
Rest assured that your concerns are understood and respected. The treatment can be adjusted to accommodate your specific needs and comfort level. Recognising that conversations about the circumstances surrounding your scar may evoke emotional responses, I am here to provide a supportive and empathetic environment during your session, drawing from my own experiences with scars and their narratives.
WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE CHANGES?
Immediate changes following treatment are possible, while some individuals may notice improvements in the days following their session. In some cases, multiple treatments may be necessary to observe significant changes.
HOW QUICKLY CAN SCAR THERAPY BEGIN?
Typically, scar therapy can commence after an 8-week healing period. To ensure a seamless start to your treatment journey, it is advisable to reach out for a preliminary discussion before scheduling your first session to address your unique needs.
WILL MY SCAR COMPLETELY DISAPPEAR?
While scar tissue cannot be entirely eradicated, scar therapy can lead to varying results, with early intervention often yielding the best cosmetic outcomes. It’s important to note that even older scars can benefit from treatment, emphasising that it’s never too late to seek scar therapy for potential improvements.
